What To Do With A Blue/Black Laptop Screen

There you are sipping your morning coffee, ready to seize the day in the company of your beloved laptop (for work or some last-minute-summer-online-shopping, but who are we to judge?!).
You open it only to see a blue or black screen.

Freaking out at this -not so lovely- sight is understandable, however no need to panic, just follow these steps to help you determine the issue and see how to remediate it.

  1. First and foremost, start with the cliché: restart your laptop. Rebooting your laptop can fix most simple glitches!
  2. Plug an external monitor (screen), if the new monitor is working properly then it’s an LCD/LED (Backlight) problem.
  3. When you turn on your Laptop, listen to the “Beep” sound.
If the screen is blue but you heard a “Beep” then the issue is from the memory (RAM).
If you don’t hear any sound then you have a hardware or software issue. Check the following step to correctly identify it!
  4. If you’re working on a Windows laptop, you can check if your drivers are working and updated. Go to the Control Panel of your laptop, under the “Hardware and Sound” section you can access your “Device Manager”. If there’s an update request, always make sure to do it through a secured website and an official source i.e. the original manufacturer’s website.

If you don’t have any driver issue showing or requesting an update then the source of the problem is from your hard drive or graphics card.

By now you must have either fixed the problem (yay!) or identified it, and you can go to a professional to repair the issue knowing what should be fixed.  It is not at all recommended to try to fix it yourself as this kind of issues – almost always – requires opening your laptop and performing technical manipulations. So unless you have the required skills or knowledge, give it to the professionals and avoid aggravating the issue.
