How to Summer-Proof your Smartphone

Summer is finally here, and the fun outdoor activities begin. BBQ, sunshine cocktails, and strolls in the city are just the activities you’re going to be looking forward to. Oh who are we kidding – summertime is mall time! And beach time, too.

But in all seriousness, there are plenty of activities that you can do in the summer, and during most of these activities, your smartphone is going to be your companion. Human beings are reasonably tolerant to heat (we have, after all, been around for quite a bit longer than phones), but your favorite smartphone isn’t as evolved or as tolerant as you are.

So, here are a few tips and tricks to keep your smartphone in tip-top shape with your various summer activities.

Dubai summers are a little hot. Okay, fine, they’re really hot. And on some days, it’s quite humid too, especially during the middle of August to October (summers here extend to October. Sorry, folks!). And you will be going through various temperature changes and conditions throughout the day between being indoors and outdoors.

General tips:

● Don’t use your phone immediately when going outdoors: The difference in temperature between air conditioned indoors and the hot, humid outdoors will produce water droplets on your phone, particularly around the speaker grills and microphone.
The moisture can also form inside, depending on how sealed your phone is. Avoid using your phone for a few minutes until the phone’s temperature settles to prolong its life.

● Keep your phone in your pocket or purse when outdoors: This will minimize condensation from the surrounding humidity, as your pocket or purse acts as a barrier. Since the weather can be dusty at times, keeping your phone in your pocket or purse is a good idea.

● Get a protective case: Phone cases offer good protection from dust and humidity which will give your phone a fighting chance should it slip from your sweaty hands.

● Stay hydrated: Just because this article is about keeping your smartphone healthy, doesn’t mean we have forgotten about you!
Keep a bottle of water with you at all times and drink regularly, even when you’re not feeling particularly thirsty.

It’s also likely that you’re going to go to the beach at some point, so here are a few recommendations to keep your smartphone alive and kicking after your excursion.

Beach Tips:

● Don’t keep your phone out in the sun: It might seem like common sense, but phones are often forgotten out in the sun. Not only are you putting the phone at the risk of theft (though Dubai is quite safe), but your phone will overheat. It’s not going to evaporate, but you don’t want your battery to get very hot and be a fire hazard.

● Avoid the sand at all costs: when you’re not using your phone, make sure it’s tucked away safely in your backpack or belongings. Sand can easily clog speaker grills, enter the innards of your phone, and incapacitate the charging port.

● Keep your hands clean: Unless you’re planning to get roasted, you’re going to lather yourself in sunscreen and oils. Make sure you dry your hands well before touching your phone.

If you enjoy outdoor activities, we applaud your commitment but aside from focusing on your own hydration and sun protection, here are some tips for your phone:

Outdoor Sports:

● Use arm bands for running and cycling: This will protect your phone from sweat, humidity, and from slipping.

● Don’t leave the phone in the car: It can get very hot in there. Should you leave it in the car, make sure to place it in a bag in the trunk away from sunlight.
